USS Connecticut hit ‘uncharted seamount,’ investigation concludes

A U.S. Navy nuclear submarine crashed into an “uncharted seamount” last month, an investigation uncovered.

The results of the investigation into the U SS Connecticut 's collision in the Indo-Pacific region, first reported by USNI News on Monday, have been submitted to U.S. 7th Fleet commander Vice Adm. Karl Thomas, who will review and determine if punishment is necessary.

The submarine’s nuclear propulsion was not damaged in the Oct. 2 crash and remained fully operational. No sailors sustained any life-threatening injuries, though two service members suffered moderate injuries described as “bumps, bruises, and lacerations.”

“The command investigation for USS Connecticut (SSN 22) has been submitted to Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet for review and endorsement,” a statement from the 7th Fleet public affairs office reads. “The investigation determined that Connecticut grounded on an uncharted seamount while operating in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region.”
