Russian Bomber Intercepted by F-35 Jet off US Coast

Footage circulated on social media shows a very close encounter between a United States stealth fighter jet and a pair of Russian military aircraft, including a bomber, near Alaska.

A spokesperson for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said in a statement to Newsweek that the flight maneuvers of the Russian aircraft shown in the video "are once again not what one would expect to see from a professional Air Force."

Newsweek has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry for comment by email.

Why It Matters

The U.S. military has established a large air defense identification zone (ADIZ) around Alaska for the ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security. It begins where sovereign airspace ends and is a defined stretch of international airspace.
