Neera Tanden testifies in Biden mental acuity probe

Neera Tanden, the former director of President Joe Biden’s Domestic Policy Council, testified Tuesday as part of the House Oversight Committee’s investigation into Biden’s mental acuity while in office.

Tanden did not respond to questions on her way into the interview with House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.). Democratic Reps. Robert Garcia, who was elected as the panel’s new top Democrat during Tanden’s testimony, and Wesley Bell joined for the questioning.

In her prepared opening remarks obtained by POLITICO, Tanden criticized the committee for focusing on the previous administration instead of the current one, amid what she argued was a moment that necessitated executive branch oversight. She explained that as White House staff secretary, she could direct autopen signatures to documents — a system used by previous administrations that Republicans have made a focal point of their probe of the Biden White House.
