Major Power Outage Across Spain and Portugal, Airports Closed

A major power outage has hit Spain and Portugal, including their capitals.

Traffic lights stopped working, telephone lines were down, mobile phone networks were affected, card payment machines were down and trains have stopped running.

Several airports, including Madrid airport, which is Spain's busiest, had no electricity, El Mundo reported.

Madrid's mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, urged residents to limit their movements and stay off roads.
