Former NFL player Phillip Adams reportedly killed five people in a York County, South Carolina, home before taking his own life.
Dr. Robert Lesslie; his wife, Barbara Lesslie; their two grandchildren, 9-year-old Adah Lesslie and 5-year-old Noah Lesslie; and James Lewis, who was working at the residence at the time, were all killed from gunshot wounds on Wednesday, the York County Sheriff's Office said in a series of tweets. Law enforcement found Adams in a nearby house after department personnel said they were looking for a black man in camouflage shorts.
Adams's parents live near the home where the shooting unfolded, and the suspected gunman shot himself with a .45 caliber firearm, according to the Associated Press.
Trent Faris, a spokesman for the York County Sheriff's Office, knew Robert Lesslie and said he was his childhood doctor.
“Dr. Lesslie was my doctor growing up,” Faris said during a press conference. “Dr. Lesslie has been one of those people that everybody knows. He started Riverview Medical Center in Rock Hill, and it’s been a staple in Rock Hill for years.”
Adams played for a number of teams, including the Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, and the New York Jets, from 2010 to 2015 as a defensive back.
Police previously requested residents to "remain in their homes and lock [their] doors," but the threat has since been alleviated.
An investigation is in progress, and officials from the York County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.
