Alabama governor blames unvaccinated for 'letting us down' amid case increase

Republican Gov. Kay Ivey blamed people without COVID-19 vaccinations for the rising case numbers in Alabama, saying they are “choosing a horrible lifestyle of self-inflicted pain.”

There were 11,004 new coronavirus cases in Alabama reported over the past 14 days, according to state data, something Ivey suggested could have been avoided with more “common sense.”

“The new cases in COVID are because of unvaccinated folks,” Ivey said Thursday. “Almost 100% of the new hospitalizations are with unvaccinated folks, and the deaths are certainly occurring with the unvaccinated folks. These folks are choosing a horrible lifestyle of self-inflicted pain.”

Ivey called the vaccine “the greatest weapon we have to fight COVID” and said the unvaccinated are failing to do their part.
