House Republicans and Democrats Sign Letter Imploring Biden to Reject Obama’s Iran Deal

140 House Republicans and Democrats have signed onto a letter imploring President-imposed Joe Biden to reject Obama’s Iran deal.

They want Biden to use sanctions to compel more out of Iran before signing onto a deal. Obama’s Iran deal, which was invalidated by Trump, was widely criticized as a giveaway of sorts to the Islamic dictatorship. Biden has claimed he will reenter the deal.

“As the Biden administration considers negotiations with Iran, we write to express our bipartisan and shared view that we must seek an agreement or set of agreements with Iran that are comprehensive in nature to address the full range of threats that Iran poses to the region,” the letter states.

“As Democrats and Republicans from across the political spectrum, we are united in preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon and addressing the wide range of illicit Iranian behavior,” the letter adds.

The effort, organized primarily by Reps. Anthony Brown (D-MD) and Michael Waltz (R-FL), has been signed by 70 Republicans and 70 Democrats.

As of right now, Iran is demanding relief from economic sanctions as a prerequisite for reentering any deal with Biden. These bipartisan lawmakers believe these preconditions are wholly unacceptable. 

The letter admits “what the parameters of a final deal should entail and the process by which it is reached” are largely up for grabs, but said that certain tenets are essential for any deal to be reached with Iran.

“Three core tenets – their nuclear program, their ballistic missile program, and their funding of terrorism – must be addressed from the outset,” the letter states.
