The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has recommended not closing down schools during the coronavirus pandemic. On Thursday, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said research shows COVID-19 is typically acquired in students’ homes rather than in schools.

This comes amid renewed discussions in several school districts across the country over whether they will, once again, suspend in-person teaching. Dr. Redfield said students are safe within schools, where they can maintain social distancing guidelines.

“Our big threat for transmission is not the public square, it’s small family gatherings…where people become more comfortable,” he explained. “They remove their face mask and they get together, and it’s a silent epidemic that begins to transmit.”

The CDC released data in October, which did not find a correlation between rises in COVID-19 cases and schools reopening. It suggested children under the age of 10 are significantly less likely to spread the virus than adults.
